Extended Care Paramedic

Whangarei, Northland, New Zealand

Seeking Interest from Paramedics to support a new initiative.

An exciting opportunity has arisen where we are able to offer a part time flexible hours position for an experienced Extended Care Paramedic or someone on the pathway to be a Paramedic who will support a new national initiative “Comprehensive Primary Community Teams” (CPCT) in primary healthcare for Whangarei and the Mid North.

We want to work with anyone who is interested and meets the criteria below to create a role that works for you as much as it supports this initiative, so here's an opportunity to create the flexible hours that suit your needs. Up to 30 hours per week for a fixed term period to June 2025.

This new initiative aims to support an increase in access to services, and equitable health outcomes through integrating a range of roles including Pharmacists, Physiotherapists, Care Coordinators and Extended Care Paramedics, into existing general practices. This model along with improving health outcomes has a strong focus on expanding the skill mix available to primary healthcare teams and includes support for specialist pathways development for each of the roles. With a priority focus on Māori, Pacific and rural people, these teams are intended to help reach more of our at-risk communities and reduce barriers to accessing care.

Mahitahi Hauora is a primary health entity underpinned by Te Tiriti o Waitangi, our Kaupapa includes ensuring whanau and communities are able to achieve self-determined wellbeing, access to the services they determine they need, and to live a long and healthy life. As the largest PHO in the Tai Tokerau region, we work collaboratively with community, primary healthcare providers and key partners to support general practices, Māori health providers and social sector agencies, in achieving better health outcomes for our Tai Tokerau population.

The Position – Extended Care Paramedic

The primary purpose of the role is to provide front-line assessment and care interventions as an integrated member of the general practice inter-disciplinary team. Working closely with the GP's, nurses and the wider team, the CPCT Practice Extended Care Paramedic duties will include:

Telephone triage

Telehealth and face to face consultations

Providing comprehensive clinical assessment and treatment for people requiring urgent care

Issue specified medications under standing orders

Supporting practice clinical processes in collaboration with other clinicians

Providing informal education/information to clinicians and whānau

Extensive collaboration with other community health providers to support management of care.

While to be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate the following, we are interested in talking to any Paramedic with a range of experience levels and background, particularly as support for specialist pathway development may be an option for this role.

Can you demonstrate the following:

Current Registration with Te Kaunihera Manapou Paramedic Council

Current Annual Practicing Certificate (APC) with no restrictions

Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science (Paramedicine) with Extended Care Paramedic specialisation or equivalent.

A comprehensive understanding of inequities in access and health outcomes, and a detailed knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application to shaping all efforts within primary care

Experience working in the Primary & Community healthcare environment

Advanced written and verbal communication skills

Excellent time management and organisational skills

Excellent critical appraisal skills with ability to identify and apply the best evidence-informed solutions to clinical and practice questions and issues

Unencumbered Class 1 Drivers licence

While not essential, being able to demonstrate the following would be an advantage:

Has extensive post-graduation experience within an emergency ambulance service (to ensure an appropriate background in acute care)

Previous experience practising as an Extended Care Paramedic within primary care or in an emergency ambulance service.

You must be a NZ Citizen or Permanent resident or have a current open NZ work visa.
